Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy Highlights Workers as the Backbone of Indias Coal Industry

New Delhi, May 1: Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy extended his best wishes on International Workers’ Day, emphasizing that workers are the foundation of the coal industry.

In a letter, he expressed his gratitude to all workers on this significant day. He stated, “On May 1, International Workers’ Day, I wish you all my best and profound gratitude. Workers are the backbone of our coal industry.”

Referring to the workers, he noted that their relentless efforts in challenging conditions within mines play a crucial role in meeting the country’s energy needs and sustaining economic progress. “With pride and gratitude, I salute your labor that lights up millions of homes, powers industries, and enriches our nation. Your contribution to the great objective of a self-reliant India and record coal production strengthens the country’s progress and independence.”

He acknowledged that workers are continuously engaged in securing the nation’s energy requirements and advancing national progress. “It is our duty to stand firmly with you and your families. Recognizing your dedication and sacrifice, the company has consistently strengthened its welfare framework to ensure not only your safety and well-being at the workplace but also meaningful support for your families. Our commitment is unwavering in creating an ecosystem where every employee feels valued, safe, and empowered, just as you have empowered the nation through your tireless service.”

The letter further mentioned that under the Ministry of Coal, Coal India Limited has developed 23 model hospitals, 33 model colonies, 32 model schools, and 30 model sports complexes, all equipped with state-of-the-art facilities in the first phase. Various sports activities are also organized throughout the year to encourage active family participation. “All policies and programs in our mission to create a happy, sustainable community prioritize the needs of workers.”

The Ministry of Coal is also committed to reinforcing welfare measures that directly impact the lives of employees and their families after their service. The launch and successful operation of a portal and mobile app have streamlined the timely settlement of provident fund and pension benefits, addressing long-standing concerns of both retired and serving employees.

The contribution-based retirement medical scheme currently provides medical assistance to 113,898 beneficiaries and their spouses who have retired after years of dedicated service in coal companies.

Throughout the year, areas needing improvement in our medical infrastructure have been identified, and our coal companies have planned phased measures to enhance our dispensaries and hospitals in the coming days. This will ensure better healthcare for our employees and their dependents. In addition to the existing medical framework, over 523 hospitals across the country have been listed to provide special medical facilities for serving employees and their families, as well as retired employees and their spouses. More than 160,000 individuals from surrounding communities and over 50,000 members of our coal community have benefited from various health camps organized by coal companies.

The new labor codes implemented by the government have begun to change the ground reality for workers, providing them with stronger social security and more robust protections. They also recognize the contributions of contract workers more equitably and help ensure greater stability and dignity for families living in coal areas. This reform is a decisive step toward fairness, stability, and the dignity that every worker in the coal sector has always deserved. I also warmly welcome the 5,600 new employees who joined the Coal India family this year. The Ministry of Coal is committed to your welfare and progress. Together, we will work towards realizing your dreams of building a self-reliant and energy-secure India, where the dignity of labor is duly respected.
