Ranchi, August 28: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior accounting officer and two assistant accounting officers from the regional pay and accounts office in Ranchi for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of over ₹48,000 from a colleague. An official confirmed this on Thursday.
The trio reportedly solicited a bribe from a constable to process various allowance bills for his unit’s colleagues.
The arrested individuals have been identified as senior accounting officer Santosh Kumar Mahto and assistant accounting officers Sunil Kumar and Sujit Kumar Singh. They are scheduled to be presented in a competent court on Friday.
The CBI registered a case against the three public servants on Wednesday. Allegations state that the accused officials demanded a bribe from the complainant, a head constable from CISF, NTPC, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for processing travel allowance (TA) and children’s education allowance bills for several officers in their unit.
On Thursday, the CBI set up a trap at the regional pay and accounts office of CISF under the Ministry of Home Affairs in Ranchi. During the operation, the three accused were caught red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹48,400 from the complainant. The CBI seized this amount as evidence.
The agency is conducting searches at five locations related to the accused in Ranchi and Dhanbad. During these searches, the CBI has confiscated objectionable documents and cash.
In a separate case, the CBI has arrested a fugitive former postal officer in Odisha involved in a scam of ₹13.98 lakh deposited in a post office. The former branch postmaster of the Bonda post office, Sharda Swain, was taken into custody in Bargarh for alleged involvement in the 2015 post office savings fraud case.
