Washington, June 17: After a gap of approximately 16 months, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump met in Evian during the G7 summit outreach program. This meeting has generated significant discussion, with the world now closely watching the potential bilateral talks between Modi and Trump. In an exclusive interview, U.S. Senator Suhas Subramanyam expressed that President Trump may be looking to rectify past mistakes.
He stated, “The hope is that President Trump will normalize relations with India. Tensions have arisen due to certain decisions and statements, such as tariff policies and comments made about India. The U.S. has strained relations with several allied nations, making it essential to restore a normal direction in relations with India following this meeting.”
Subramanyam expressed optimism that the meeting would stabilize ties between the two countries and strengthen collaboration with India as a key democratic partner.
Commenting on India-U.S. trade relations and regional economic challenges, he noted that increased tariffs have impacted trade between the two nations. “Initially, tariffs were raised significantly, which were later somewhat rolled back, but the effects are still being felt,” he explained. According to him, many businesses in Virginia, which he represents, rely on trade between India and the U.S. and have suffered losses, along with noticeable price increases.
Subramanyam emphasized, “It would be beneficial for all democratic partner countries, including India and the U.S., to strengthen their economic ties and explore new avenues for cooperation.”
He also highlighted the importance of this partnership in light of China’s expanding influence in Asia, making economic cooperation among democratic nations even more crucial.
Additionally, Subramanyam expressed concern over the rising hatred against the Indian-American community. He stressed the need to confront and oppose all forms of hatred, especially when directed at the Indian-American community.
He shared his personal experiences of facing racial comments on social media, where some individuals have told him to “go back to your country” or labeled him as “not a real American.”
“In such an environment, remaining silent is not an option. It is essential to speak out wherever there is hatred or incitement,” he concluded.
