Tehran, August 28: Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stated on Friday that diplomatic relations with Washington could be restored if the U.S. acknowledges that pressure tactics against Tehran are ineffective.
Zarif made these comments in a post on the social media platform ‘X’, referencing his recent meeting with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani in Tehran.
He emphasized, “Reviving diplomacy is not impossible. It depends on whether the U.S. understands a simple fact.”
According to reports from the Xinhua news agency, Zarif called on the U.S. to build trust, engage in respectful dialogue, recognize Iran’s rights, and fulfill its commitments to the country.
It is noteworthy that on June 18, the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum aimed at ending hostilities in the region. Both parties were expected to engage in discussions within 60 days to reach a final agreement, with the deadline expiring on August 17. However, talks have stalled following heightened tensions between the two nations last month.
Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the “harshest economic measures” against any country aiding Iran. He described this move as an unprecedented level of economic warfare and isolation, dubbing it “Economic D-Day.”
A senior Iranian security official warned on Thursday that if the U.S. undertakes any “malicious” actions, Iran would respond decisively by targeting U.S. military and economic interests in the region.
According to the semi-official news agency Fars, Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, made these remarks during his meeting with Qatar’s Prime Minister in the Iranian capital.
Rezaei highlighted Tehran’s distrust of Washington, accusing it of repeatedly undermining diplomacy and negotiations. He mentioned that Iran would only reopen the Strait of Hormuz if Washington takes practical steps to meet Tehran’s conditions.
Meanwhile, the Qatari Prime Minister reiterated his country’s commitment to cooperate with Iran, citing regional responsibilities.
