Two Lives Lost in Wild Elephant Attacks in Assams Nagaon District

Guwahati, May 15: Two individuals tragically lost their lives due to wild elephant attacks in Nagaon district, Assam. These incidents, which occurred on Friday, highlight the escalating human-elephant conflict in the region. The increasing frequency of such attacks has created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety in rural communities.

According to local sources, the first incident took place in the Bajiyagaon area of Samaguri. A man named Shariful Islam was working in a vegetable field when a wild elephant suddenly emerged from the nearby forest and charged at him. Shariful sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, the doctors could not save him.

The second attack also occurred in the Samaguri area, where a young man named Pranab Das was attacked by a wild elephant. He was critically injured and admitted to the hospital, but he too succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Following these incidents, there is a palpable sense of fear among the local population. Residents report that wild elephants frequently invade villages and agricultural areas in search of food, putting lives at constant risk.

In response to the incidents, a team from the forest department arrived at the scene and initiated a monitoring campaign to track elephant activities. Officials have urged villagers to avoid venturing alone into forest-adjacent areas during dawn and dusk and to remain vigilant.

Experts indicate that deforestation, habitat loss, fragmentation of forest pathways, and human encroachment are contributing to the rising human-elephant conflict in Assam. Districts such as Nagaon, Goalpara, Sonitpur, Udalguri, Golaghat, and Baksa frequently report crop damage, attacks on villagers, and incidents of elephant fatalities.

Local residents have called on the government and the forest department to increase regular patrols in sensitive areas and to establish robust barriers for safety, aiming to prevent such tragic events in the future.
