Aizawl, August 21: In a significant breakthrough, Mizoram’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested two suspects in the alleged murder of a 15-year-old girl in Lunglei district, 18 days after the incident. The police announced the arrests on Friday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as 20-year-old Denghaminthanga and 34-year-old Lalneihkima. According to police reports, both suspects and the victim were residents of Mualthuam North village in Lunglei district. Denghaminthanga is reported to be a cousin of the deceased girl.
Police officials revealed that the girl went missing from her home on August 3. Her body was discovered two days later, on August 5, hidden in bushes within the premises of a local government school. Authorities also recovered two knives from the crime scene.
Following the incident, a case was registered at the Lunglei police station, leading to the formation of the SIT, which is headed by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Lunglei.
During the investigation, the SIT interrogated several individuals, including the two arrested suspects, who had previously been summoned for questioning multiple times.
According to police, the SIT conducted a thorough analysis of mobile phone usage patterns, forensic evidence, and other relevant information, which intensified suspicion against the two men.
After extensive questioning and examination of the evidence, both suspects confessed to the crime before the SIT.
The suspects have been presented in a local court, where they were remanded to judicial custody.
Police stated that the SIT is still working to uncover the motives and circumstances surrounding the murder. To avoid compromising the investigation, no further details have been released to the public at this time.
Mizoram police have urged the community to cooperate with the investigation and refrain from taking the law into their own hands. The investigation is ongoing.
