Kolkata, August 21: The Kolkata High Court granted interim relief to Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and MP from Diamond Harbour, in three additional FIR cases against him. This decision, made by a single bench on Friday, protects him from arrest and any stringent police action related to these cases.
With this ruling, Banerjee has now secured interim protection in eight out of a total of 16 FIRs filed against him across various police stations in the state.
The three cases that received interim relief involve two FIRs lodged at the Bishnupur police station and one at the Rabindra Nagar police station, all located within the Diamond Harbour police district of South 24 Parganas. These cases are linked to alleged large-scale irregularities in the free ‘Sebashray’ health camps operated during the previous TMC government.
Justice Sougata Bhattacharya provided interim protection to Banerjee until September 11, with the next hearing for these three cases scheduled for September 7.
Meanwhile, the hearings for the eight other cases, where Banerjee has not yet received interim relief, will take place on August 25.
Abhishek Banerjee has claimed that following the change of government in West Bengal after this year’s assembly elections, the new BJP administration is targeting him out of political vengeance. He alleges that numerous baseless FIRs have been filed against him for this reason.
Conversely, the complainants assert that Banerjee abused his authority during the previous government. They also contend that they were previously denied the opportunity to file complaints with the police but have now been able to do so following the change in government, leading to the ongoing filing of FIRs against the TMC general secretary.
