Amreli, August 21: An assistant sub-inspector connected to the Savarkundla rural police station in Amreli, Gujarat, has been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly accepting a bribe of 5,000 rupees. The incident came to light when a complainant approached the agency, claiming he was being pressured to reopen an illegal liquor shop.
The accused, identified as Shyam Bagda, 39, is currently stationed at the Savarkundla rural police station. Following the complaint received by the Amreli ACB, action was initiated on Thursday. According to the ACB, there had been prior complaints regarding illegal liquor sales, which had previously been curtailed.
The ASI allegedly pressured the complainant to restart the illegal liquor shop, threatening that refusal would result in false charges being filed against him. The ACB reported that the officer initially demanded a bribe of 19,000 rupees for allowing the liquor shop to operate, but after negotiations, this amount was reduced to 5,000 rupees.
The complainant was unwilling to pay a bribe to any police officer. Consequently, he contacted the ACB’s toll-free number 1064 and subsequently filed a complaint at the Amreli police station.
Following the complaint, the ACB initiated action. During this operation, the accused reportedly demanded the 5,000 rupees from the complainant, which he later received. ACB officials apprehended the officer while he was accepting the bribe. This operation took place on a dirt road leading to the village of Oliy in the Savarkundla taluka of Amreli district, specifically at the entrance of Jawarbhai Patel’s field.
According to the ACB, the 5,000 rupees received by the accused were returned to the victim. It is alleged that the officer abused his official position to obtain the bribe. The entire operation was initiated by Inspector T.S. Rizvi, who is stationed at the Amreli police station, along with other ACB officials.
