Patna, March 12: Bihar government minister Ram Kripal Yadav stated on Thursday that the trust vote against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was destined to fail from the outset. He criticized opposition parties, particularly the Congress, asserting that this move clearly indicates a decline in political standards.
He told a news agency, “It was evident from the beginning that this would happen. The proposal brought against the Speaker by the Congress party and other opposition members was bound to fail. This reflects a significant decline in political conduct, and especially, the Congress party has fallen to a very low level.”
Yadav questioned the purpose of introducing such a proposal when the outcome was already clear. He remarked, “When you already know the result, why take such a step? What do you hope to achieve? A person in a constitutional position deserves respect, regardless of their previous party affiliation.”
He noted that such actions against the Speaker are rare in India’s parliamentary history. To his recollection, a trust vote was previously brought against Lok Sabha Speaker GV Mavalankar, but he could not recall any other instance of such a proposal being made against a Speaker. He emphasized that the opposition has never attempted such a move before.
Yadav also stated that differences in Parliament are natural, but that does not justify targeting the Speaker. He questioned, “What wrong has the Speaker done? Has he conspired? The Speaker makes decisions based on what he believes is right. The House has rejected this proposal, and it will continue to do so if similar attempts are made in the future.”
In fact, the Lok Sabha dismissed the trust vote against Speaker Om Birla by voice vote after a lengthy debate lasting nearly 13 hours on Wednesday. This proposal was initiated by opposition parties, who accused the Speaker of failing to ensure impartiality in the House’s proceedings. However, during the debate, the government firmly rejected these allegations.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also defended the Speaker, criticizing the opposition. He described the introduction of such a proposal as an unfortunate step in parliamentary politics.
Shah stated, “The Speaker of the Lok Sabha does not belong to any one party; he represents the entire House. He is the guardian of all members’ rights. Therefore, bringing a trust vote against the Speaker cannot be seen as a courageous act.”
He explained that both government and opposition members participated in the discussion, leading to the proposal’s rejection.
The Home Minister added that such incidents are not common. A trust vote against the Speaker has occurred only once in nearly four decades, marking it as an extraordinary event.
Shah also warned that questioning the Speaker’s impartiality could undermine the credibility of democratic institutions.
He concluded, “The Lok Sabha is the largest democratic platform in India, and its credibility is recognized not only in the country but worldwide. When the integrity of its leader is questioned, it raises concerns about our democratic processes.”
