Washington, March 5: President Donald Trump has announced a new initiative aimed at accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) development in the United States while reducing electricity costs for domestic consumers. This initiative, dubbed the “Ratepayer Protection Pledge” by the White House, brings together some of the world’s largest technology companies.
During a roundtable meeting at the White House with top tech executives, Trump stated that this agreement will allow companies that build large AI data centers to generate their own electricity or pay for it, rather than relying solely on the existing power grid. He expressed optimism, saying, “These are very exciting times.”
Under this initiative, tech giants such as Google, Meta, Amazon Web Services, OpenAI, and Oracle have pledged to fund the energy production necessary for their expanding AI operations. Trump noted, “Under this new agreement, major tech companies are committing to fully cover the costs of additional electricity production required for AI data centers.”
He assured that this arrangement would not lead to increased electricity prices for average Americans. “This means tech companies and data centers will have the electricity they need without raising consumer electricity bills,” he added.
Trump emphasized that companies will build new energy capacity for their projects, encouraging them to “create your own power plants.” He asserted that this policy will ensure that the U.S. maintains its lead in emerging technologies, stating, “America is far ahead in the world of AI. We are ahead of China.”
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence has significantly increased the demand for data centers, which require substantial electricity to power advanced computing systems. Governments worldwide are considering how to support AI infrastructure without raising electricity prices for consumers.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that this policy is essential for maintaining America’s technological edge. He remarked, “The country that leads in AI will become a military superpower.”
Google’s President, Ruth Porat, mentioned that the company is increasing both its data center investments and electricity production capacity. She revealed, “In Texas alone, we have contracted to add over 7,800 megawatts of new energy production capacity to the grid.”
Meta executive Dina Powell McCormick affirmed the company’s commitment to covering the full cost of energy used in its data centers. She added, “We want to ensure that we cover the entire cost of energy used in our data centers.” She also noted that the company’s investments have helped reduce energy costs in some communities.
