Strengthening India-US Relations Despite Differences: Indian Ambassador

Washington, June 24: Despite some differences on various issues, the strategic, economic, technological, and security cooperation between India and the United States has become stronger than ever. Namgya C. Khampa, India’s Deputy Chief of Mission in the US, stated that the India-US relationship has emerged as one of the most significant partnerships of the 21st century.

Addressing an event on Capitol Hill, Khampa emphasized that the growing ties between New Delhi and Washington are founded on shared interests, robust economic collaboration, technological partnerships, defense cooperation, and regional security.

She remarked, “The India-US partnership is rightly considered one of the most important alliances of the 21st century. This is not because we agree on every issue 100 percent. Naturally, there are some differences, but the strategic thinking behind this relationship is strengthening year by year.”

Khampa’s comments come at a time when discussions are ongoing to enhance trade, strengthen technological cooperation, and deepen security coordination in the Indo-Pacific region.

She referenced the recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, highlighting their commitment to advancing bilateral relations. The two leaders share a warm relationship built on strong trust.

The Indian diplomat also mentioned US Secretary of State Marco Rubio‘s recent visit to India, where he participated in bilateral meetings and a gathering of Quad foreign ministers.

Khampa noted that trade remains a crucial pillar of the relationship between the two nations. Negotiators from both sides are continuously working to finalize a bilateral trade agreement, with hopes for positive outcomes soon.

She explained that the goal is not merely to reduce tariffs but to establish a more robust, deeper, ambitious, and mutually beneficial economic partnership. According to her, India’s growing energy needs and America’s vast energy resources make both countries natural partners. Progress is being made in areas such as crude oil, LNG, and civil nuclear energy cooperation.

Describing technology as the most critical area for future partnership, Khampa stated that collaboration in AI, semiconductors, advanced computing, quantum communication, and other vital technologies is a priority for both nations. Efforts are also underway to diversify supply chains and reduce dependence on select technological hubs.

Regarding defense and security cooperation, she noted that it now extends beyond military exercises to include maritime security, intelligence sharing, critical technologies, and counter-terrorism efforts. She reminded attendees that last year, India and the US signed a 10-year defense framework agreement, which lays out a roadmap for future collaboration.

Khampa highlighted the significant role of the Quad group (India, the US, Japan, and Australia) in promoting stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

In her address, she mentioned that over 5 million people of Indian origin living in the US have transformed the governmental relations between both countries into a broader social partnership.

Khampa praised the Indian-American community’s vital contributions in business, healthcare, technology, entrepreneurship, education, and public service, stating that this community serves as a strong bridge between the two nations.
