Washington, February 19: U.S. President Donald Trump praised Indian-American leader Harmeet Kaur Dhillon during a special event at the White House. This ceremony was held in celebration of Black History Month, where Trump discussed his administration’s achievements in criminal justice reform, the economy, and public safety.
Opening the event, Trump stated, “This is a very special occasion. We are celebrating the centennial of Black History Month, which is a significant achievement in itself.”
In his address, Trump paid tribute to the late civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, saying, “He was a unique individual, but a good person. I pay my highest respects to him.”
While mentioning the guests and officials present, Trump discussed legal matters and referenced controversies involving several institutions, including Harvard University. He noted, “Harmeet is keeping an eye on these issues.”
Born in 1969, Harmeet Kaur Dhillon was appointed as the Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in 2025. Previously, she served as the Vice Chair of the California Republican Party and as a California representative on the Republican National Committee. With her appointment to this significant position in the Trump administration, she has become one of the highest-ranking Indian-American officials.
Trump also highlighted his administration’s efforts for Black Americans, mentioning the First Step Act, which he described as a historic criminal justice reform. He noted that for over thirty years, many had been striving for criminal justice reform, but it had not been achieved until now.
He further discussed long-term financial support for historically Black colleges and universities, stating that his administration created nearly 9,000 “Opportunity Zones” to promote economic growth.
On the economy, Trump claimed that the United States is currently one of the strongest economies in the world. He asserted that since the election, the stock market has reached record highs 53 times. He also mentioned that the number of people employed in American history has never been higher, and wages are rising faster than inflation.
Alice Marie Johnson, who had her life sentence commuted during Trump’s first term, also spoke at the event. She remarked, “Only in America is a story like mine possible. This president took me from prison to the White House.”
In his closing remarks, Trump emphasized that Black History Month is a time to honor the legacy of those who fought for equality and justice. He reiterated his goal of building a safe, strong, and prosperous America.
From an Indian perspective, Dhillon’s mention at this event reflects the growing role of Indian-Americans in the U.S. administration.
Black History Month is celebrated every February to honor the history, struggles, and contributions of the African-American community.
