Assam Chief Minister Pays Tribute to Bhupen Hazarika on His 100th Birth Anniversary

Guwahati, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, paid heartfelt tribute to the renowned musician, singer, composer, and filmmaker Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his 100th birth anniversary. Sarma described Hazarika as a deep-seated emotion within the heart and soul of Assam.

In a post on the social media platform X, Sarma remarked that Hazarika’s timeless music and profound lyrics have inspired generations. He emphasized that Hazarika’s spirit transcends mere recognition, embodying the essence of Assam’s culture, stories, and dreams.

The Chief Minister noted that the year-long nationwide celebrations marking Hazarika’s centenary have reaffirmed the legacy of the “Bard of the Brahmaputra.” He hailed Hazarika as a great “Sudhakanth,” asserting that his contributions extended far beyond music, serving as a powerful medium for showcasing Assam’s cultural identity and aspirations to audiences both nationally and globally.

Sarma also acknowledged the tribute paid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Hazarika, calling it a fitting homage to the great artist. He recalled that Modi had inaugurated the year-long centenary celebrations last year in Guwahati. Sarma expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister’s personal guidance and involvement in the events and expressed hope for Modi’s presence at the concluding ceremony in New Delhi later this year.

The centenary celebrations are designed to highlight Hazarika’s immense contributions to music, cinema, literature, and India’s cultural landscape. In Guwahati, tributes were paid at the Bhupen Hazarika Sammanway Teerth, where Sarma joined people from various walks of life to honor the legendary artist.

Born on September 8, 1926, in Sadiya, Hazarika became one of India’s most influential cultural figures. His songs reflect the lives, struggles, and aspirations of ordinary people while promoting themes of humanity, harmony, and universal brotherhood. His artistic journey took him beyond Assam, particularly to Kolkata and Mumbai, where he made significant contributions to Indian music and cinema.

Hazarika was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2019. His 100th anniversary is being celebrated through year-long programs that honor his lasting legacy. Sarma’s tribute comes at a time when Assam is striving to preserve the cultural heritage of one of its most celebrated sons for future generations.
