New Delhi, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : India has appointed Gina Uika as its next High Commissioner to Botswana, a significant diplomatic role that she is expected to assume shortly. Uika, a 2006 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, currently serves as a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The announcement was made on September 8, 2026, through an official statement from the MEA. Uika is a distinguished diplomat, having previously held the position of Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Moscow. In that role, she played a crucial part in strengthening bilateral relations between India and Russia, focusing on trade exhibitions and strategic dialogues.
India and Botswana have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, established soon after Botswana’s independence in 1966. These relations are founded on mutual friendship and cooperation. India opened its High Commission in Gaborone in 1987, further solidifying ties, while Botswana established its embassy in New Delhi in 2006, reflecting the growing partnership between the two countries.
Bilateral trade has primarily centered around the diamond and gemstone sectors, with Indian companies playing a vital role in cutting and polishing. Additionally, collaboration in pharmaceuticals, agricultural processing, digital education, and mining continues to expand.
In a related development, nine cheetahs were brought from Botswana to India’s Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, marking a significant milestone in India’s ambitious cheetah reintroduction project. These cheetahs, which include six females and three males, arrived on February 28, 2026.
