Doha, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : Qatar has condemned recent Houthi attacks targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea and cities in Saudi Arabia. The Qatari government stated that these actions threaten the safety of international maritime routes and the freedom of movement. It emphasized the urgent need for the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in response to such reckless behavior.
In a post on social media platform X, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Houthi group’s assaults on civilian infrastructure and critical facilities. The ministry highlighted that cities like Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran in Saudi Arabia have been targeted, resulting in injuries to numerous civilians, including women and children. Furthermore, the attacks pose a significant risk to commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
The Qatari Ministry described these assaults as reprehensible and aggressive, showcasing a blatant disregard for civilian lives and the security of regional nations. It also pointed out that these actions constitute a clear violation of Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and international law, escalating tensions that threaten regional peace and stability.
Qatar firmly opposes attacks on civilian sites and critical infrastructure, reiterating the necessity to halt such irresponsible actions immediately. The country has called on the international community to adopt a firm stance against these violations and to implement relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216 concerning Yemen and Resolution 2722, which pertains to maritime security and freedom in the Red Sea.
The ministry emphasized that ensuring safe and free passage through international maritime routes is a fundamental principle of international law, guaranteed by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Qatar reiterated its full solidarity with Saudi Arabia, supporting all legitimate measures to protect its sovereignty, security, territorial integrity, and national interests.
Additionally, Qatar stated that Saudi Arabia’s security is integral to its own safety and that of other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states. The country expressed its hopes for the swift recovery of those injured in the attacks and prayed for the protection of Saudi Arabia and its people from all forms of harm and danger.
