New York, February 13: President Donald Trump has announced the cancellation of a significant climate decision made in 2009. This decision has been the legal foundation for climate regulations in the United States. It established rules for greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles and policies to promote electric vehicles.
Trump made this announcement alongside Lee Gelldin, head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, calling it “the largest deregulatory action in American history.”
During the press conference, Trump stated that he is eliminating the so-called “Endangerment Finding.” He described it as a poor policy from the Obama administration that harmed the American auto industry and increased vehicle prices for consumers.
The 2009 “Greenhouse Gas Endangerment Finding” indicated that carbon dioxide, methane, and four other greenhouse gases posed a threat to public health and welfare. According to Xinhua News Agency, this finding was used to justify regulations such as vehicle emission standards and the reporting requirements for fossil fuel companies.
Trump argued that this decision was neither fact-based nor legal. He claimed that fossil fuels have saved millions of lives for generations and helped billions rise out of poverty worldwide.
In response, former President Barack Obama took to social media platform X, stating that this decision was the basis for controlling pollution from vehicles and power plants. He warned that its repeal would make people less safe and less healthy, complicating the fight against climate change. Obama asserted that this move was solely intended to benefit the fossil fuel industry.
