Tripura Government Focuses on Boosting Exports and Agricultural Production: Agriculture Minister

Agartala, March 7: Tripura’s Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Friday that the primary goal of the BJP government is to enhance agricultural production and exports to provide greater benefits to farmers.

The minister, alongside Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, flagged off a shipment of 3 metric tons (MT) of Kalikhasa and Harinarayan rice—both organic aromatic varieties from Tripura—at the Agartala railway station bound for Kolkata.

Nath emphasized that the state government’s main objective is to increase farmers’ income. He stated, “From day one, we have been working towards this goal, aiming to double farmers’ income while ensuring sustainable agricultural development.”

He noted that a private organization is exporting 3 MT of Kalikhasa and Harinarayan rice from the state to Kolkata. This initiative is led by two farmer producer companies (FPCs): the Bosong Group from Tulshikhar in the Khowai district and the Thanasa Farmers Organization from the Gomati district.

The minister remarked, “Since our government took office, we have been establishing FPCs. Their responsibility is to unite farmers and ensure they receive fair prices for their produce.” He explained that a total of 3 MT of organic rice, which includes 2.5 MT of Kalikhasa and 0.5 MT of Harinarayan, is being exported outside the state. He also mentioned that the rice is being exported to maintain its aroma for an extended period.

He further added, “The market price for this rice is approximately 55 rupees per kilogram, but through these FPCs, farmers are selling it for 70 rupees per kilogram. Our main goal is to maximize farmers’ profits. We must stand by them, and the state government is fully supporting farmers. Our ultimate aim is to increase production and exports to ensure greater benefits for farmers.”
