Agartala, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : As the five-day Durga Puja festival approaches, commencing on October 16, authorities in Tripura are tightening security along the India-Bangladesh border. The Border Security Force (BSF) and Tripura police will enhance their vigilance to ensure a safe celebration. Additionally, a special campaign targeting drug-related activities will be launched during the festivities.
Director General of Police (DGP) G.S. Rao emphasized that the BSF will bolster its monitoring efforts at the border during the festival. He also noted that the state police will increase surveillance in border villages to deter any potential threats.
In response to inquiries about the proposed Smart Border Project, Rao revealed that 806 kilometers of the 856-kilometer international border between Tripura and Bangladesh is now fully fenced. However, the remaining 50 kilometers remain unfenced due to challenging terrains, water bodies, and dense forests.
Rao stated, “The BSF and Tripura police are collaborating to prepare a proposal for the Smart Border Project, which both agencies will implement together.” Earlier this year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Modi government would establish an impenetrable border grid using drones, radar, advanced cameras, and other cutting-edge technologies.
During his visit to Tripura in June, Shah instructed the BSF to work closely with district administrations, police stations, and local councils to prevent infiltration and strengthen border security.
Tripura shares an 856-kilometer international border with Bangladesh and is surrounded by the neighboring country on three sides. This geographic reality makes the northeastern state particularly vulnerable to cross-border migration, infiltration, smuggling, and other criminal activities.
DGP Rao indicated that during the festive season, Tripura police will conduct a focused campaign against drug-related activities in Agartala and other urban areas. Approximately 11,000 personnel from the Tripura police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) will be deployed across the state to maintain law and order.
To monitor anti-social activities and crimes, plainclothes officers will be stationed on moving trains and in crowded or critical locations. Furthermore, to ensure round-the-clock surveillance and public safety, watchtowers, 218 CCTV cameras, and police and traffic assistance booths will be established in Agartala and other district towns.
Rao also announced that a green corridor will be created to facilitate the movement of ambulances and other emergency vehicles during the festival days. Traffic restrictions will be imposed during peak hours when large crowds are expected at Durga Puja pandals, allowing for better crowd management and the smooth operation of emergency services.
This year, over 2,900 community Durga Puja celebrations and more than 100 family pujas are anticipated across Tripura. Approximately 720 of these celebrations will take place in West Tripura district, which is expected to draw significant crowds, necessitating extensive security and traffic management measures.
