New Delhi, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : Restrictions on Delhi Metro services have been eased ahead of a planned opposition protest, with 45 stations now set to remain closed instead of the previously announced 57. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) stated that the entry and exit points at these stations will be closed from 9 PM on Friday until 6 PM on Saturday.
Initially, the Delhi administration had decided to shut down 57 stations due to the anticipated protest. However, the Supreme Court intervened on Friday, directing that metro services should not be completely halted in light of the planned demonstration.
The court emphasized to the central government the need for metro and other railway services to continue operating in a controlled manner to minimize public inconvenience.
In its revised advisory, DMRC cited security concerns as the reason for the closure of the 45 stations during the specified time frame. Security agencies will continuously assess the situation and issue further instructions as necessary.
The stations affected include prominent locations such as Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, and Jama Masjid, among others.
DMRC clarified that interchange facilities will still be available at all affected stations, except for New Delhi station. This means passengers can change trains but will not be able to enter or exit those stations.
The restrictions are linked to the opposition’s planned demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, focusing on issues like the special intensive revision of the voter list and alleged electoral irregularities. The opposition is also demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.
The Supreme Court’s directive aims to strike a balance between security needs and public convenience, ensuring that metro services do not come to a complete standstill during the protests while still providing essential public transport.
