UN Chief Celebrates Navi Pillays Nobel Prize as Honor for Human Rights Defenders

United Nations, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has hailed the awarding of the Nobel Prize to Navi Pillay, a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights of Indian descent, as a recognition for those defending international law and human rights. His remarks came amid criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who questioned Pillay’s Nobel accolade.

Guterres expressed his congratulations, stating, “Navi Pillay has demonstrated that the power of law must prevail over the law of force, and the protection of human rights is the strongest safeguard against injustice.” He emphasized that the Nobel Committee has reminded the world that peace should be built on enduring principles, not the whims of the powerful.

Current Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk described the award as a proud moment for the global human rights movement. He noted that, at a time when human rights are under attack from various fronts, including from those in positions of great power, this recognition is particularly poignant.

Guterres acknowledged Pillay’s legacy, referencing her early advocacy against apartheid in South Africa, which included standing up for Nelson Mandela and others fighting against oppressive regimes. He remarked on her unwavering commitment to highlighting human rights violations, which has often led her to face criticism from various governments and factions.

For decades, Pillay has been a champion of international law and human rights, serving as a steadfast, independent voice in some of the most significant legal matters of our time. Her recent work includes chairing the UN’s independent international commission of inquiry on the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as serving as an international judge for cases involving genocide, including the Rwandan genocide.

Guterres concluded by reaffirming Pillay’s role as a symbol of international law and human rights, underscoring the importance of her contributions to the field.
