Agartala, March 19: The Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) has rescheduled the elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) to April 12, 2026, in consideration of tribal festivals. Originally set for April 13, the date was moved to ensure maximum voter participation.
In a notification released on Wednesday, the commission noted that various community leaders, ministers, legislators, political parties, and social organizations had requested a reconsideration of the election date.
The original date coincided with significant tribal festivals such as Garia Puja, Biju, and Buisu, which are celebrated extensively in the election areas. To facilitate higher voter turnout, the commission decided to change the date.
SEC Secretary Anurag Sen mentioned that this issue was also discussed during the assembly’s budget session, where the proposal to hold elections on April 12 was put forth. After considering all aspects, the commission finalized the new date while keeping all other schedules unchanged.
According to State Election Commissioner Manoj Kumar, the last date for nominations is March 25, with scrutiny of nomination papers on March 26. Candidates will have until March 28 to withdraw their nominations, and the counting of votes will take place on April 17.
The 30-member TTAADC consists of 28 elected members, with the state government appointing 2 members. The council has been under the control of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) since 2021, led by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma.
In the 2021 elections, TMP won 18 seats, taking power from the Left Front, while the BJP secured 9 out of 11 contested seats.
The TTAADC administers approximately two-thirds of Tripura’s area (10,491 square kilometers) and serves a population of about 1.216 million, with around 84% belonging to tribal communities. Established on August 23, 1984, the council aims to protect the rights, welfare, and development of the tribal community. The first elections were held in 1985, marking a significant step towards tribal self-governance.
