India-Hungary Parliamentary Friendship Group Set to Form Following Diplomatic Meeting

Budapest, June 24: Indian Ambassador Anshuman Gaur met with Agnes Varga, the Speaker of Hungary’s National Assembly, on Tuesday. The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation and strengthening parliamentary exchanges between India and Hungary.

The Indian Embassy in Hungary shared on social media, “The ambassador had the honor of meeting Speaker Agnes Varga. Topics discussed included bilateral cooperation, parliamentary exchanges, and our shared commitment to democracy and parliamentary systems. We are pleased to announce the upcoming establishment of the India-Hungary Parliamentary Friendship Group.”

The embassy also highlighted a special connection, noting that the Speaker hails from Balatonfüred, a city of significance as India celebrates ‘Tagore Year.’ This marks the centenary of Rabindranath Tagore’s historic visit to the city.

In April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar and his Fidesz party on their significant electoral victory. This win represents a major shift in Hungary’s political landscape.

On social media, Prime Minister Modi expressed, “Heartfelt congratulations to Peter Magyar and the Fidesz party for their impressive election victory. There exists a deep friendship between India and Hungary, rooted in shared values and mutual respect. I look forward to working together to strengthen our cooperation and advance the India-European Union (EU) strategic partnership for the prosperity and well-being of our peoples.”

This congratulatory message came after the Fidesz party secured a substantial majority in the parliamentary elections held on April 12, marking the end of Viktor Orbán’s 16-year rule. Following the counting of nearly all votes, the Fidesz party conceded defeat.

Prime Minister Modi‘s message underscores the long-standing strong ties between India and Hungary. Despite political and economic changes, the relationship between the two nations has remained stable and positive. Even with shifts in Hungary’s foreign policy post-Cold War, the relationship has consistently been based on closeness, friendship, and mutual respect.
