Bengaluru, March 21: The family of a young veterinarian who lost her life during a hippo treatment in Shivamogga has accused officials of negligence and is demanding accountability for this tragedy.
Dr. Samisha Reddy, 27, was killed on March 20 at the Tyavarekoppa Tiger and Lion Safari in Shivamogga during an incident involving a pregnant hippo.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, Dr. Reddy’s uncle, Naveen, criticized the authorities for their negligence and called for strict action. He stated that a vehicle was arranged to take them to the safari, and the hostel warden sent two girls along with her. A guard then led them into the enclosure to examine the hippo.
Naveen questioned this decision, emphasizing that basic precautions should have been taken when dealing with a dangerous wild animal. He noted that even predator animals like lions tend to stay away from hippos and criticized the officials for allowing a trainee to get so close.
He further explained that the hippo was due to give birth within a week, making it extremely sensitive and defensive, which heightened the risk of an unexpected attack. “At the very least, a safe distance should have been maintained. How could they allow her to enter the enclosure so carelessly?” he asked.
Describing the incident as a severe case of official negligence, he demanded strict action against those responsible. Remembering Samisha, he said her death is a tremendous loss. He described her as a kind and talented student fully dedicated to animal welfare. Despite having opportunities for a prosperous life, she chose to serve rather than pursue commercial interests.
Naveen shared that Samisha had a deep passion for helping animals from a young age and often collaborated with veterinarians in Bengaluru to address issues related to stray animals. He mentioned that she had been advised to pursue higher education abroad but opted to stay in India to serve. “She was extremely compassionate towards animals. I have never seen anyone like her,” he added. The police and forest officials are continuing their investigation.
