Bengaluru, July 22: Police in Karnataka detained BJP leaders on Wednesday as they marched towards the KPCC headquarters in Bengaluru. The BJP leaders were protesting against the Congress party’s handling of the NEET controversy and alleged neglect of state issues.
During the march, a large number of Congress workers gathered and targeted senior BJP legislator B.P. Harish, who had arrived directly at the KPCC office. As he stepped out of his vehicle, Congress workers surrounded him and shouted slogans.
When police intervened to protect him, it was reported that Congress workers threw eggs at the officers. The police then escorted Harish down a nearby alley and redirected the protesters.
Meanwhile, BJP legislators and MLCs, led by opposition leader R. Ashok in the Assembly and opposition leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy in the Council, marched from Vidhana Soudha to the KPCC headquarters. Police halted them near the Cantonment area and took them into custody.
Speaking to the media, R. Ashok stated that the BJP was protesting against Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party in front of the Karnataka Congress office. He accused them of staging political drama over the NEET issue while ignoring critical problems facing Karnataka.
Ashok emphasized that the Congress leadership was focusing on protests in Delhi instead of addressing the severe drought affecting large parts of Karnataka. He criticized the state government for its failure to manage the crisis, claiming that Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and other officials were preoccupied with political activities in the national capital.
“The entire state is suffering from drought. Already, 175 taluks have been affected, with only a few districts remaining untouched. There is no functioning government in Karnataka right now. The government should immediately declare a drought and allocate ₹20 crore for drinking water projects in each assembly constituency and taluk,” Ashok demanded.
He also called for the establishment of taluk-level drought task forces to monitor and address the situation urgently.
Targeting Congress’s protests in Delhi over the NEET issue, Ashok alleged that the party was attempting to gain political advantage. He criticized Rahul Gandhi for participating in these protests while neglecting to address the deaths of 11 innocent people during the RCB celebrations in Bengaluru.
