Tragic Deaths Linked to Voter List Pressure in West Bengal

Kolkata, March 5: A booth-level officer and an elderly man died in West Bengal on Thursday. Their families claim that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) for the voter list caused immense pressure and stress, leading to these tragic incidents.

According to police reports, the deceased booth-level officer (BLO) was Subimal Karak, aged 58, residing in the Hatimari area of the Salboni police station. He was a teacher at Sabli Primary School and also managed responsibilities as the BLO for the Hatimari booth.

His family stated that due to his age and poor health, he was reluctant to take on the SIR responsibilities. However, he was assigned the task, which reportedly caused him significant mental stress. On Thursday morning, his health suddenly deteriorated, and his family rushed him to a local doctor, where he was pronounced dead.

After learning about the incident, local TMC MLA Sujoy Hazra visited the deceased’s home. He remarked, “This is not the Election Commission; it is a Torture Commission. People will never forget this atrocity. The Election Commission is to blame.”

The deceased’s daughter, Suchandrima Karak, shared that her father faced overwhelming work pressure. She said, “He worked all day and even late into the night. He had a pre-existing heart condition and did not want to take on this responsibility. Now, everything is over for us.”

This incident has raised questions about the excessive pressure on BLOs. Meanwhile, Arup Das, a spokesperson for the BJP in the Midnapore organizational district, stated, “Any death is tragic, but now whenever someone dies, TMC blames the Election Commission. This dirty politics must stop.”

In a related incident, 62-year-old Jayadev Dutta from Ranaghat (Nadia district) also passed away. His family claims he was distressed after discovering that his name was missing from the final voter list released following the SIR process on February 28.

The family reported that Jayadev did not have all the necessary documents for his father. He submitted some documents during the SIR hearing, but upon seeing his name in the removed category of the final list, he became mentally disturbed, leading to a heart attack on Thursday morning.
