Guwahati, July 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Wednesday that there will be no shortage of funds for flood relief and rehabilitation efforts. He emphasized that the central government bears almost the entire financial burden of disaster management and additional assistance will be sought if necessary.
While addressing reporters in Sonari, Charaideo district, Chief Minister Sarma assured that the state government will provide all possible support to families affected by the floods. He noted that many families have lost their homes, livestock, essential documents, and other valuable belongings.
“The issue is not about money. The central government reimburses almost all expenses related to flood relief and erosion control. The state government only needs to incur the costs and provide a complete account to the center,” he explained.
He mentioned that under the established disaster management system, the central government already allocates funds for relief work. If the current amount is insufficient, the state government can request additional funds.
“If an extraordinary situation arises that falls outside the existing regulations, we can seek extra assistance from the central government. If needed, we will directly request help from the Prime Minister. There will be no shortage of funds to assist the affected people,” he assured.
The Chief Minister promised that the state government will compensate for the losses caused by the floods as much as possible. This includes losses related to homes, educational certificates, livestock, and other essential properties destroyed by the floods.
He stated that the state’s top priority is currently rescue and relief operations. The army, NDRF, SDRF, and district administration are conducting round-the-clock relief and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas.
However, he acknowledged that many villages are still submerged, making it difficult to reach them, which hampers rescue efforts.
As the floodwaters recede, Chief Minister Sarma assured that the state government will continue to assess the damage and advance relief measures accordingly.
He noted that the full extent of the devastation is yet to be revealed, and the actual losses may far exceed initial government estimates.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the state government will stand by the flood-affected families until rehabilitation is complete and normalcy is restored in the affected districts.
