Agartala, July 20: Anurag, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Tripura, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a bathroom connected to his office at the state police headquarters on Monday. Officials have confirmed the incident.
The senior IPS officer was rushed to the Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by doctors.
Dr. Pradeep Bhattacharya, head of the Medicine Department at the hospital, stated that Anurag showed no signs of life upon arrival. After examination, the doctors declared him dead.
“The body of the DGP has been sent for post-mortem. The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report is available,” Dr. Bhattacharya informed the media.
As of now, the Tripura government and the state police headquarters have not released any official information regarding the circumstances surrounding DGP Anurag’s death.
Anurag, a 1994 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Tripura cadre, took over as DGP on May 17 of last year, succeeding Amitabh Ranjan from the 1988 batch. Prior to becoming DGP, Anurag served as the Director General of Police (Intelligence) in Tripura.
Anurag held a postgraduate degree in Food Technology from the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysore and a Master’s in Police Management from Osmania University. Additionally, he earned a postgraduate diploma in Cyber Crime from the NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad.
Officials noted that Anurag was a certified fraud examiner by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners in the USA. He had extensive policing experience in Tripura, having served from 1995 to 2003.
During his tenure in Tripura, Anurag worked as the Sub-Divisional Police Officer in Longtharai Valley and served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in the then undivided West Tripura and South Tripura districts.
He also held positions as the SP of the Special Branch and Assistant Inspector General (AIG) (Headquarters).
From 2003 to 2004, Anurag worked with the United Nations mission in Kosovo. Between 2005 and 2013, he was on central deputation, serving as SP and later as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
After returning from central deputation, Anurag served as Inspector General (Law and Order) in Tripura from 2013 to 2016. He was again on central deputation from 2016 to 2023, during which he held various positions, including Inspector General (Research and Correctional Administration) in the Bureau of Police Research and Development, Inspector General (Personnel) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and Joint Director and Additional Director in the CBI.
Anurag also served as the chairman of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
