Beijing, August 15: China will host the third Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) from August 17 to 28 in Liaoning Province’s Dalian city.
According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Kuo Qiaohun, this meeting will be the largest in APEC’s history in terms of attendance and events. It aims to enhance cooperation across various sectors and systems within the APEC framework, paving the way for the upcoming summit in November.
During the conference, approximately 130 meetings will be held, including plenary sessions, subcommittee meetings, working group discussions, and seminars. Key areas of focus will include trade, transportation, food security, customs, technology, energy, health, disaster prevention, and anti-corruption. It is estimated that over 2,300 representatives will participate in these discussions.
Additionally, spokesperson Kuo Qiaohun addressed comments made by the U.S. State Department regarding Huangyan Island. He emphasized that Huangyan Island is considered part of China’s territory. Establishing and managing a national-level nature reserve on the island falls within China’s sovereign rights, and the U.S. has no authority to make irresponsible remarks about it. China urges the U.S. to cease escalating tensions and provoking conflict in the South China Sea, and to stop using maritime issues to tarnish China’s reputation.
