Tragic Cruise Accident in Jabalpur: PM Modi Expresses Condolences and Announces Financial Aid

Mumbai, May 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on Friday regarding the tragic cruise accident that occurred at the Bargi Dam in Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh. The death toll has risen to nine, with at least four passengers still missing.

In a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi described the loss of life and property as “extremely tragic” and extended his condolences to the affected families. He also wished for the swift recovery of the injured.

PM Modi wrote, “The loss of life and property due to the cruise capsizing in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, is extremely tragic. I express my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident. I pray for the quick recovery of the injured. The local administration is assisting those affected.”

Additionally, the Prime Minister announced financial assistance for the victims. He stated that each family of the deceased will receive a compensation of two lakh rupees from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), while the injured will receive 50,000 rupees.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also expressed his sorrow on social media, calling the news of the cruise accident in Jabalpur “extremely sad and painful.” He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the departed souls to find peace and for the grieving families to have the strength to endure this unbearable loss.

The Indian Army has also taken charge of locating the missing passengers. In collaboration with civilian authorities and disaster relief teams, the Army has launched a search operation. It was reported that upon request from the district administration, the Army’s “Central India Region” promptly initiated humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations.

A junior commissioned officer and 13 soldiers, including trained divers from the Shatrujeet Brigade, were airlifted to Jabalpur and deployed at the accident site.

In an official statement on Friday, the Army confirmed that search and rescue operations are being conducted in close coordination with civil administration, NDRF, and SDRF teams. Despite extremely challenging underwater conditions, our soldiers are working around the clock to locate the missing passengers and assist in rescue efforts.
