Tottenham Hotspur Signs Portuguese Midfielder Mateus Fernandes

London, July 2: Tottenham Hotspur has completed the signing of Portuguese international midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United. The 21-year-old Fernandes considers this move to be a significant step in his career.

Fernandes has already made his senior debut for Portugal and joins Tottenham following an impressive Premier League season with West Ham. He is expected to strengthen Tottenham’s midfield ahead of the new season.

“I am very excited for this next step. Spurs is a massive club, and the head coach played a crucial role in my decision to come here. Our conversation was very special. We share the same vision for football: to take the field as a strong team and strive to win every match with passion and energy. I can’t wait to get started, meet the fans, and give my all for the club,” Fernandes stated.

Sporting Director Johan Lange welcomed the midfielder, expressing confidence that Fernandes has the potential to become a key player for the club. “He possesses excellent technical skills, intelligence, and maturity. At a young age, he has shown that he can perform consistently well in challenging, high-pressure matches. We believe this is the right place for Mateus’s next career step,” Lange said.

Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi praised the young player’s technical abilities and tactical understanding, saying, “I have been an admirer of Mateus for a long time. He has a great touch on the ball, along with the passion and understanding that are essential to our style of play. Despite his age, he has valuable Premier League experience and has demonstrated skill and consistency at this level.”

Fernandes, who emerged from Sporting CP’s academy, made his first-team debut in 2022 and enjoyed a successful loan spell at Estoril. He joined Southampton in 2024, where he played 36 Premier League matches and won the club’s ‘Player of the Season’ award. He moved to West Ham in August 2025, playing in every Premier League match since then, scoring three goals and providing four assists, while also ranking among the league’s top tacklers. His consistent performances earned him his first call-up to Portugal’s senior team earlier this year, and he made his international debut in April with a 2-0 victory against the USA.
