Kolkata, June 13: A team from West Midnapore conducted a raid at the residence of Trinamool Congress Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday morning, aiming to locate his executive assistant, Sumit Roy.
The operation, led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) from the Salboni police station, included personnel from the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF). They arrived at Banerjee’s home on Kalighat Road in South Kolkata around 3 AM. Shortly after, a local team from the Kalighat police station also joined the operation.
Initially, the police team, which included a significant number of female officers, knocked repeatedly on the main door. With no response, they waited outside for over two hours. Finally, after waiting, they forced entry into the house with the assistance of staff from the state’s disaster management department.
The raid was conducted in connection with a case registered at the Salboni police station, as Roy has been evading authorities. However, the state police have not disclosed further details about the case.
Sources familiar with the situation indicated that the raid was prompted by concerns that Roy might be hiding at Banerjee’s residence. In response to the news of the raid, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee quickly arrived from her nearby residence on Harish Chatterjee Street.
After more than two hours, the joint security team departed from Abhishek Banerjee’s home. Following the operation, Banerjee accused the police of misconduct, stating that the security personnel had broken into his home by forcing the main gate.
It is noteworthy that the Trinamool leader will face questioning from two different investigative agencies over three consecutive days. On June 14, he is scheduled to appear at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Bhawanipur regarding discrepancies in signatures related to a significant proposal concerning the appointment of opposition leaders in the state assembly. This will be the second round of questioning, following extensive inquiries conducted the previous Thursday.
On June 15, he is set to face questioning at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Salt Lake regarding a multi-crore ‘school-job-for-cash’ scam. The ED had issued him a notice on June 3. He is then expected to return to the CID headquarters for further questioning on June 16. This case is linked to allegations of inciting violence before the recent assembly elections and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah. CID officials had sent him a notice regarding this matter on Thursday evening.
