CBI Arrests Railway Engineer in Assam for Accepting Bribe

Guwahati, June 14: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a senior section engineer of the Northeast Frontier Railway in Silchar, Assam, on Sunday for allegedly accepting a bribe.

The engineer was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹20,000 from a complainant. A case has been registered against the government official, who was set to be presented in court on Sunday.

According to CBI officials, the railway engineer demanded a bribe to approve a bill. The bill, amounting to nearly ₹20 lakh, was pending approval from the accused officer.

When the complainant approached the senior section engineer to get the invoice processed, the accused requested a percentage of the total outstanding bill as an illegal bribe in exchange for processing and approving the bill.

The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused accepting the ₹20,000 bribe. Following this, the engineer was arrested.

CBI officials are preparing to present him in a Guwahati court for custody. Meanwhile, a search is being conducted at the accused’s residence.

In a similar case a few days ago, the CBI arrested an assistant divisional engineer of Northern Railway and a trackman in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, for illegally accepting money from a complainant. They had demanded a two percent commission for approving pending bills from a private company.
