TMC Resignations Continue as Arup Chakraborty and Shantanu Sen Step Down from Spokesperson Roles

Kolkata, May 28: The wave of resignations in the Trinamool Congress (TMC) continues as councilor Arup Chakraborty resigned from his position as party spokesperson on Thursday. In an email to party leadership, he cited personal reasons for his departure. This follows the resignation of former Rajya Sabha MP Shantanu Sen from the same role.

In his resignation letter, Chakraborty expressed gratitude for the responsibilities entrusted to him by the party. He stated that he always aimed to present the party’s ideology, values, and principles to the public and media during his tenure as spokesperson.

Just a day prior, on Wednesday, Chakraborty also stepped down from his position as a member of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) accounting committee, submitting his resignation to KMC Commissioner Smita Pandey.

Around 1 PM on Thursday, he announced his resignation from the spokesperson role in an email addressed to TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Chakraborty, who represents Ward Number 98 in KMC, emphasized that his decision was based on personal reasons.

Simultaneously, another TMC councilor, Sushant Ghosh, also resigned from his position as chairman of Borough Number 12. Both leaders later submitted their resignations to Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim.

However, they clarified that they are not resigning from their councilor positions but are stepping down from their administrative roles within the corporation.

In a subsequent press conference, Chakraborty commented on the recent assembly election results, stating, “This outcome was unexpected. However, we must seriously accept the people’s decision. If we cannot accept defeat, our previous victories become meaningless. Party workers are currently in crisis. Where are the leaders who have been ministers for a long time?”

Meanwhile, senior TMC leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Shantanu Sen also resigned from the spokesperson position on Thursday, sending his resignation letter to former Chief Minister and TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee. Sen stated that he made this decision in acceptance of the public mandate in the state assembly elections.
