New Delhi, July 30: Maharashtra’s Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane met with the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, on Wednesday. During this meeting, he requested the central government to prioritize the approval of various projects under the Sagarmala 2.0 program for Maharashtra.
Rane emphasized the need for prompt approval of these proposed projects, stating that timely implementation would accelerate port-based development and strengthen the state’s maritime infrastructure.
The proposed initiatives include the modernization of fishing ports, development of coastal infrastructure, improved freight connectivity, promotion of coastal shipping and inland waterways, and expansion of marine tourism.
According to a government statement, Minister Nitesh Rane noted that these projects would create significant employment opportunities, boost private investment, and enhance Maharashtra’s coastal economy.
The Maharashtra Maritime Board has already submitted detailed project proposals under Sagarmala 2.0 to the central government. Rane mentioned that these proposals align with the national goal of ‘Developed India 2047’ and reiterated the request for their expedited approval.
The state government’s proposals encompass five key areas: modernization and expansion of ports, development of fisheries-related infrastructure, strengthening coastal connectivity and freight systems, promoting inland waterways and water transport, and advancing marine tourism.
As per the government release, the state government has proposed to modernize small and medium ports located along Maharashtra’s approximately 720-kilometer coastline. The aim is to enhance the cargo handling capacity of ports, modernize fishing ports, jetties, and fish landing centers, while also strengthening livelihoods in coastal areas and the rural economy. The proposal includes improving road and rail connectivity to ports, linking coastal shipping to industrial supply chains, promoting environmentally friendly and electric water transport, and developing necessary infrastructure for coastal cruises, passenger terminals, and beach tourism.
Minister Nitesh Rane expressed confidence in receiving continuous support from the central government. He stated that timely approval of these proposals would significantly strengthen Maharashtra’s port infrastructure, fisheries sector, and coastal economy, further solidifying the state’s position as a major maritime hub in the country.
He affirmed that the Maharashtra government is fully committed to promoting sustainable, inclusive, and port-based economic development through strategic investments in maritime infrastructure.
