Kolkata, June 23: A faction within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, known as the “Rebel but Majority” group, has announced plans to approach the Election Commission of India (ECI) after the current budget session of the assembly concludes. This faction intends to assert the legitimacy of its newly formed National Executive Committee (NWC), which notably excludes party leader Mamata Banerjee and General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
Led by expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, the rebel group declared the formation of the new NWC on Monday. Shortly thereafter, the loyalist faction, referred to as the “Original but Minority” group, sent a letter to the Election Commission detailing the official committee, which includes Mamata Banerjee as National President and Abhishek Banerjee as General Secretary.
A member of the rebel faction stated that they would present their claim regarding the new committee’s legitimacy to the Election Commission once the budget session concludes. They argue that the new NWC was established with majority support during a meeting held on Monday, and that all leaders present signed the proposal.
“This proposal passed in the meeting is a valid legal document. Based on this, we will present our claim regarding the legitimacy of the new NWC to the Election Commission,” the MLA asserted.
The newly announced committee has appointed senior MLA and former minister Arup Roy as president, replacing Mamata Banerjee. Former minister Arup Biswas has been named vice president, alongside MLAs Firhad Hakim and Rathin Ghosh, who will also serve as vice presidents.
The new committee includes Ritabrata Banerjee, Javed Khan, Sandipan Saha, and Sabina Yasmin as general secretaries, while Akhruzzaman has been entrusted with the role of treasurer.
