TMC MLA Soham Chakraborty Faces Loan Dispute in Kolkata High Court

Kolkata, April 1: Bengali actor and outgoing Trinamool Congress MLA Soham Chakraborty is facing legal action over allegations of loan default. A case has been filed in the Kolkata High Court by businessman Shahid Imam from Hooghly. The hearing is expected to take place on Thursday.

According to court sources, Chakraborty will be made a party to the case, meaning he or his representative must appear in court during the next hearing.

In his petition, Imam claims he invested money for the production of a Bengali film associated with Chakraborty in 2021. He alleges that he provided the actor with ₹6.8 million, of which he has only received ₹2.5 million back. The remaining amount is still outstanding.

Imam was arrested in 2022 in connection with a school teacher recruitment case and was granted bail in 2024. After his release, he sought the return of the outstanding amount from the TMC MLA. He also alleged that he received threats when he requested the money.

Recently, a complaint was filed at the Charu Market police station in Kolkata regarding this matter, prompting the High Court to direct Chakraborty or his representative to appear.

Currently, Chakraborty is campaigning in the Karimpur area of Nadia district, where he is contesting the assembly elections on a Trinamool Congress ticket. In February, he reportedly received a legal notice concerning the loan default allegations.

The notice stated that a written agreement was made between Imam and Chakraborty for the production of a Bengali film titled “Manik Jor” on July 29, 2021. According to the agreement, Imam promised to invest ₹10 million, with ₹6.8 million provided in the initial phase.

However, the film’s production did not proceed, and the petitioner claims that no work has been done on the project, including finalizing the script or scheduling the shoot.

In a conversation with the media, Imam stated that Chakraborty returned ₹2.5 million in two installments but failed to repay the remaining ₹4.3 million, leading him to pursue legal action.
