New Delhi, April 1: In a passionate speech during the Lok Sabha session on Wednesday, Central Minister Pemmashani Chandrashekhar discussed the bill that grants legal status to Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.
Chandrashekhar expressed his pride in speaking as a “son of Amaravati” during this historic moment. He described the move to legally recognize Amaravati as a significant milestone in the history of the Telugu people and their dream capital.
The minister also extended heartfelt gratitude to the farmers who sacrificed their ancestral agricultural land for the capital’s construction. He acknowledged the women who participated in peaceful protests and long-standing movements advocating for Amaravati’s development as the state capital.
The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill 2026 was introduced in the Lok Sabha. This bill will officially recognize Amaravati as the state’s only capital. Previously, on March 28, the Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a resolution paving the way for this legislation.
Following the bifurcation of the state under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act of 2014, Hyderabad was designated as a shared capital for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, with a maximum time limit of ten years. After this period, Hyderabad was to become solely the capital of Telangana, necessitating Andhra Pradesh to establish a new capital.
After extensive discussions and planning, the Andhra Pradesh government identified Amaravati as the new capital. Significant administrative, legislative, and infrastructure steps have been taken to develop Amaravati into a fully functional capital. The proposed amendment bill will officially include Amaravati as the state capital in Section 5(2) of the 2014 law, effective from June 2, 2024.
