New Delhi, April 1: Amid ongoing controversy in Parliament regarding the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill of 2026, members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have defended the legislation. They argue that it enhances transparency and is essential for national security.
BJP MP Kamaljeet Sahrawat stated that questions about foreign funding have persisted in the country for a long time. He noted that this is the third significant amendment since the original law was enacted in 2010, aimed at making the funding process more transparent. Sahrawat clarified that the government’s intention is not to impose restrictions on any NGO but to clarify the sources and uses of funds to prevent any irregularities.
BJP MP Ghulam Ali Khatana targeted the opposition, claiming that minorities have been exploited as a vote bank for years. He accused the same opposition of now attempting to instill fear among them. Khatana emphasized that any organization operating within the law will enjoy complete freedom, asserting that the government views all citizens equally.
JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha also supported the bill, stating that it was a necessary step. He highlighted the importance of knowing the sources of foreign donations, as it can sometimes relate to national security. Jha characterized the opposition’s resistance as a typical political reaction, asserting that it is the government’s duty to make decisions in the national interest.
BJP MP Dinesh Sharma echoed the sentiment, calling the bill essential for national security. He stated that this law will play a crucial role in ensuring the country’s safety and transparency.
In response to questions about the recent increase in commercial LPG cylinder prices, Sharma assured that there has been no hike in domestic gas cylinder prices and that the supply of essential goods continues smoothly. He attributed the global rise in petrol and diesel prices to international trends, noting that its impact in India has been relatively minimal due to government policies.
