U.S. Considers NATO Withdrawal After Iran Conflict

Washington, April 1: President Donald Trump is contemplating a withdrawal from NATO. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also hinted at this possibility. He stated that amid rising tensions with European allies, the U.S. may “reassess” its involvement in the alliance following the Iran conflict.

Rubio questioned NATO’s utility, arguing that if allied nations obstruct U.S. military operations, the alliance’s significance diminishes. In an interview with Fox News, he remarked, “If NATO is solely for Europe’s defense but prevents us from utilizing military bases when needed, it becomes a one-sided arrangement.”

President Trump took a firmer stance, indicating he is seriously considering removing the U.S. from NATO. In an interview with the British daily The Telegraph, he labeled the alliance a “paper tiger” and stated that exiting it is “not just an option, but a serious consideration.” He also accused European nations of not supporting his campaign against Iran.

Particularly, the U.S. has expressed frustration over the security of the Strait of Hormuz. The Trump administration asserts that this route is vital for global energy supply, yet allied countries have hesitated to deploy naval forces, increasing dissatisfaction in Washington.

The U.S. administration has contextualized this dispute within the broader framework of the Iran conflict. According to Rubio, the U.S. military is close to achieving its objectives, having significantly weakened Iran’s air force, navy, missile systems, and defense infrastructure. He stated, “We are very close to achieving our goals,” making it nearly impossible for Iran to develop nuclear weapons in the near future.

However, European leaders have opposed this stance. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated NATO’s status as “the world’s most effective military alliance” and clarified that the UK would not engage in the Iran conflict.

Established in 1949, NATO has long been the foundation of security cooperation between the U.S. and Europe. The organization is based on the principle of collective defense. However, under current circumstances, this principle applies only in the event of attacks on member countries, not external conflicts like that with Iran. Thus, Trump’s statements are deepening the growing rift in transatlantic relations.
