Kolkata, July 2: Former Trinamool Congress councillor Debaraj Chakraborty has been arrested by West Bengal police for a case involving disproportionate assets. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is now also investigating this matter.
Chakraborty was apprehended on Wednesday evening. According to sources familiar with the case, the ED has requested key allegations and related documents from the state police regarding Chakraborty’s disproportionate assets case.
An ED official stated that an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) will be filed to initiate a money laundering investigation against Chakraborty. Following this, the ED will commence a separate inquiry into the matter.
Sources indicate that the ED’s Kolkata regional office has sent initial information related to the case to its headquarters in New Delhi. The agency is now awaiting approval from headquarters to file the ECIR and begin investigating the money laundering aspect.
Last week, a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, led by Justice Jay Sengupta, rejected Chakraborty’s anticipatory bail plea. Chakraborty is married to Aditi Munshi, a well-known devotional singer and former Trinamool Congress MLA.
On the same day, the same bench granted interim anticipatory bail to Munshi, a co-accused in the disproportionate assets case. The bail was granted on the grounds that the couple has a four-month-old daughter. The state police arrested Chakraborty in Purulia on Wednesday evening.
The police had initiated an investigation against Debaraj and Aditi for allegations of undisclosed assets. It is alleged that the couple transferred at least ₹100 crore worth of assets anonymously and in the names of relatives and acquaintances ahead of the 2026 elections, while Aditi was serving as the MLA for the Rajarhat-Gopalpur constituency.
Debaraj Chakraborty was known as a prominent figure in the Bidhannagar municipality. The couple faces serious charges, including disproportionate assets, concealing property, and money laundering.
Aditi Munshi is also accused of failing to disclose her full asset details in the affidavit submitted for the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, in which she faced defeat.
