Kolkata, July 2: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will hold a crucial meeting with top administrative officials on Thursday to review the performance of the BJP-led government during its first two months. In this meeting, the Chief Minister will assess the progress of various development and welfare schemes initiated by the new government.
The Chief Minister will also evaluate the current law and order situation in the state. Additionally, he will preside over an important cabinet meeting during the day. According to sources, the main agenda of the meeting will be to discuss a significant bill related to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.
A source stated, “The draft of the UCC bill will be presented for approval by the state cabinet in today’s meeting. It has already been decided that a new committee, led by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, will prepare the final draft of the bill. This committee will submit its recommendations within the next four weeks, which will be approved in today’s cabinet meeting. Based on these recommendations, the final bill will be prepared and presented in the assembly in August.”
Earlier, while addressing the assembly on June 29, the Chief Minister mentioned that the proposed law would exclude tribal, indigenous, Kurmi, and other recognized ancient tribal communities from its scope. He clarified that this exemption is based on models adopted by Uttarakhand and Gujarat.
The primary aim of this bill is to implement a single law across the state instead of different personal laws based on religion. Once enacted, West Bengal will become the fourth Indian state to implement the UCC, following Gujarat, Uttarakhand, and Assam.
The BJP’s election manifesto promised the implementation of the UCC in West Bengal, and the new state government is now moving forward to fulfill that commitment.
