Vijayawada, March 24: The Andhra Pradesh police arrested three young men on Tuesday in Vijayawada due to their suspected ties to terrorist organizations.
The Counter-Intelligence Cell apprehended Mohammad Rahmatullah Sharif (23), Mohammad Danish (27), and Mirza Sohail Beg (23) for allegedly promoting extremist ideologies on social media platforms. The trio is suspected of having links to ISIS and AQIS and reportedly formed a group named ‘Al Malik Islamic Youth’ to radicalize young individuals. They allegedly disseminated content advocating for the display of the ISIS flag instead of the national flag.
The arrests were made near their homes in the Vinchipeta area, where police conducted searches. Authorities seized electronic devices and other incriminating materials. The three were later presented before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, which remanded them to judicial custody until April 6. Subsequently, they were transferred to Vijayawada Central Jail.
During the hearing, the judge inquired if the defendants had hired legal representation. When they indicated they could not afford a lawyer, the judge instructed them to submit a written request. The trio faces charges under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Information Technology Act at the Vijayawada Two Town Police Station.
It is alleged that all three were in contact with handlers in Pakistan and were executing their activities via social media. They reportedly attempted to influence and radicalize youth into participating in terrorist activities through platforms like Instagram and Telegram.
The Counter-Intelligence Cell conducted this operation after continuous monitoring of online extremist content and confirmed information that the accused were receiving funding from Pakistan to recruit terrorists and carry out their activities. Allegedly, they formed a group of ten young individuals not only in Andhra Pradesh but also across various parts of the country, as they are suspected of trying to establish a nationwide network by promoting extremist ideologies through online platforms.
