Mumbai, June 8: The song “Lag Ja Gale” from the film “Woh Kaun Thi” remains a timeless classic in Hindi cinema. Even decades later, its magic endures, making it one of the most beloved tracks in Indian film music. However, few know that the film’s producer, Raj Khosla, initially disliked the tune.
The situation escalated to the point where he expressed his displeasure to composer Madan Mohan. Fortunately, actor Manoj Kumar intervened, changing the course of events and allowing the song to be included in the film.

Samir Kohli, Madan Mohan’s son, shared a captivating tale about the song in an interview. According to him, when Madan Mohan first presented the tune of “Lag Ja Gale” to Raj Khosla, the director was not impressed. After listening, Khosla told Mohan that he did not expect such music from him, believing the tune was not impactful enough for the film.
Confident in his creation, Madan Mohan felt the melody was special and would resonate with audiences. A meeting was convened with other film associates present. Actor Manoj Kumar urged Khosla to listen to the tune once more.
When Madan Mohan sang the melody again, the atmosphere shifted dramatically. This time, Khosla recognized the emotional depth and beauty of the song. Immediately after it ended, he regretted his initial reaction. It is said that he jokingly remarked that he felt like hitting himself with his shoe for dismissing such a brilliant tune.
Later, Manoj Kumar proudly recounted his significant role in ensuring the song remained in the film. Time has proven how right that decision was. “Lag Ja Gale” continues to be a favorite among music lovers and is celebrated as one of the most memorable songs in Indian film history.
