The Surprising Health Benefits of Cloves: From Toothache Relief to Fresh Breath

New Delhi, August 28: Cloves are a small yet powerful spice commonly used in Indian kitchens. They enhance the flavor and aroma of various dishes, from tea to vegetables. Many people also turn to cloves for relief from cold symptoms and toothaches.

Scientific research highlights several beneficial compounds found in cloves. Notably, eugenol, flavonoids, and other plant-based chemicals contribute to their unique properties.

Cloves are particularly renowned for their effectiveness in alleviating tooth pain. The eugenol present in cloves can temporarily reduce discomfort, which is why it is often used in dental treatments. For minor toothaches, people may place a clove near the affected area for relief. However, if the pain is severe, accompanied by gum swelling or infection, consulting a dentist is essential.

Additionally, cloves are beneficial for oral hygiene. They possess properties that help combat certain bacteria. Chewing a clove after meals can help maintain freshness in the mouth. However, it should not replace regular brushing or proper dental care.

Cloves also contain antioxidants, which are crucial for protecting the body from harmful particles that can damage cells. The eugenol and other natural compounds in cloves assist in this protective role, making them a valuable addition to a healthy diet.

Moreover, cloves have anti-inflammatory properties. Swelling can occur due to injuries or other issues, and research indicates that certain compounds in cloves can help reduce these inflammatory processes. However, this does not imply that cloves can treat diseases or significant inflammation on their own; medical advice is necessary.

Research has also explored the relationship between cloves and blood sugar levels. In one study, 13 healthy and pre-diabetic individuals consumed 250 milligrams of a water-soluble clove polyphenol extract daily for 30 days. The results showed a reduction in blood glucose levels before and after meals. However, this study was small and used a specific extract rather than whole cloves, so it cannot be considered a treatment for diabetes.

Cloves also exhibit properties that help fight bacteria and fungi, further enhancing their health benefits.
