The Musical Journey of Ajit Verman: From Runaway to Renowned Composer

Mumbai, March 26: Ajit Verman, a shining star of the past, left an indelible mark on the music industry. His contributions to both parallel and mainstream Hindi cinema are celebrated even today. Verman is best known for his memorable scores in films like “Aakrosh,” “Saaransh,” “Ardh Satya,” and “Ye Aashiqui Meri.”

Born on March 26, 1947, in Kolkata, Ajit developed a deep passion for music from a young age. At just 16, he ran away from home to pursue his dreams. He faced numerous challenges during those years, but it was also when he honed his musical skills.

Living near the home of composer Salil Chowdhury, Ajit absorbed the melodies he heard and paid close attention to the hymns sung in church. Impressed by his dedication, Chowdhury invited him to join his orchestra. In 1970, Ajit moved to Mumbai and became a part of Chowdhury’s ensemble, where he met music arranger Sebastian D’Souza. D’Souza suggested that Ajit join the famous Shankar-Jaikishan orchestra. Legend has it that when Ajit played drums for the first time with Shankar-Jaikishan, Jaikishan was so impressed with his style that he immediately made him his drummer.

Ajit Verman worked on iconic films like “Mera Naam Joker” and “Anand.” He also collaborated with the duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal. In 1976, he debuted as an independent composer for the film “Noor-e-Ilahi.” However, it was with Govind Nihalani’s “Aakrosh” in 1980 that he truly gained recognition. He went on to score music for Nihalani’s “Vijeta” and “Ardh Satya.” His work in Mahesh Bhatt’s “Saaransh” remains memorable to this day.

Verman’s music was rich and complex, providing depth to the narratives. He gave opportunities to emerging voices like Madhuri Purandare, Satyashil Deshpande, and Vandana Khandekar. His last film was “Ye Aashiqui Meri” in 1998, and he provided his final background score for “Life is Good” in 2012. Ajit Verman passed away on December 26, 2012, leaving behind a legacy of musical brilliance.
