Mumbai, March 30: Tensions have escalated in Khunti district, Jharkhand, following violent clashes between two groups during the Ram Navami procession in Murhu. The unrest, which erupted on Saturday, has led to widespread disturbances across the district. In response to what they deemed a one-sided police action, a group called ‘Sarv Sanatan Samaj’ declared an indefinite shutdown starting Sunday.
The impact of the shutdown was evident on Monday, with markets and shops closed in Khunti’s district headquarters as well as in Rania, Murhu, Torpa, and Tapkara. Protesters have stated that the shutdown will continue until those detained are released unconditionally.
In light of the situation’s sensitivity, extensive security measures have been implemented. A prohibitory order under Section 163 of the BNS has been enforced in Murhu and surrounding areas, with the deployment of armored vehicles, rapid action forces, water cannons, and tear gas teams.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Varun Rajak reported that a total of ten First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed, three of which were initiated by the administration. The police claim to have gathered substantial evidence against certain individuals, while others are being released after questioning. Currently, a tense calm prevails in Khunti and Murhu, with police patrols conducting flag marches in the area.
The root of the conflict traces back to a minor altercation during the Ram Navami procession on Friday evening, which escalated into violent stone-pelting the following day. Many local shopkeepers were forced to flee their stores for safety. Rumors of gunfire further heightened tensions, although the administration has yet to confirm any shooting incidents.
Sub-Divisional Officer Deepesh Kumari is on-site, working to establish dialogue between the two parties through a peace committee. The administration has urged the public to disregard misleading news and rumors circulating on social media.
