Chattogram, June 13: Tensions escalated in Chattogram, Bangladesh, following the fatal shooting of a local leader from the ruling party’s youth wing, the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, on Saturday. Local media reports indicate that the incident has heightened unrest in the area.
According to the Bangladesh News Agency (UNB), the shooting occurred in the Raozan sub-district, where unidentified assailants targeted the Jubo Dal leader. The victim has been identified as Maksudul Haque Chowdhury Masud, aged 45, who served as the senior joint convener of the Jubo Dal in the Rangunia sub-district.
Witnesses and police stated that the attack took place around 1:30 PM in the Paharatali Chaumohoni area. The assailants fired multiple shots at Masud, resulting in his immediate death at the scene.
Local sources suggest that the murder may be linked to a long-standing dispute over sand trading. Some reports indicate that Masud was being discussed as a potential chairman candidate in the upcoming local elections.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Bilayat Hossain, who oversees the Raozan-Rangunia circle, confirmed to Bangla Tribune that a man was shot dead in the Paharatali Chaumohoni market, and the attackers fled the scene. He assured that the police are investigating the matter thoroughly and taking necessary actions.
In response to the murder, Jubo Dal activists staged protests in the Ishakali area, setting fires and blocking roads. Demonstrators are demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and strict punishment.
The police are actively investigating the case, and the situation in the area remains tense. According to Bangla Tribune, the victim’s elder brother, Swapna Chowdhury, has previously served as the chairman of the Betagi Union. Sources indicate that Masud was actively involved in politics and affiliated with the BNP’s youth wing.
Nurul Alam, the BNP president of the Raozan Paharatali Union, reported that the assailants arrived on motorcycles and opened fire on several individuals before escaping. He condemned the incident, calling for the arrest and severe punishment of all involved.
A serious statistic was presented by the Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner regarding the situation in Raozan. He revealed that since August 5, 2024, there have been 24 murders, most of which involved leaders and activists from the BNP and its allied organizations. This trend raises significant concerns about increasing political violence and law enforcement in the region.
