
New Delhi, June 25: A significant oath-taking ceremony was held in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, on Thursday. Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan administered the oath to ten newly elected and re-elected members. The event was marked by a dignified atmosphere in the house.
Several members took their oaths in their mother tongues. The newly sworn-in members include Praveen Chakravarty, Debashish Samantaray, Sanaa Satish Babu, Vijay Chintakayala, Bhashyam Ramakrishna, Lingamaneni Ramesh, Rajesh Paramanand Shukla, Baidyanath Ram, Parimal Nathwani, and Tai Tagak.
With the oath, these members officially became part of the Rajya Sabha and are now eligible to participate in the house’s proceedings. A notable feature of the ceremony was the linguistic diversity represented. Out of the ten members, five took their oaths in Hindi, one in English, one in Tamil, and three in Telugu.
This reflects India’s multilingual tradition and the respect accorded to all languages by the Constitution. The ceremony was also significant in terms of state representation, with four members elected from Andhra Pradesh and two from Jharkhand. Additionally, one member each from Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, and Odisha joined the Rajya Sabha, strengthening the voices from various states.
Attendees at the oath-taking ceremony included Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, Rajya Sabha Secretary General P.C. Modi, numerous house members, and senior officials from the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.
The oath-taking process in the Rajya Sabha is an essential constitutional tradition of Indian democracy. Through this process, elected representatives express their allegiance to the Constitution and take on the responsibility of representing the aspirations and interests of the public. The inclusion of new and re-elected members is expected to bring fresh energy and perspectives to issues related to various states and regions.
