Mumbai, June 26: A cargo ship was targeted by an unidentified projectile near the coast of Oman on Thursday. The attack caused damage to the ship’s bridge, but fortunately, no crew members were reported injured.
This information was provided by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). They reported that the incident occurred approximately 7.5 nautical miles southeast of the Dhahirah region in Oman. The ship’s captain confirmed that all crew members are safe.
UKMTO stated that relevant authorities are investigating the attack. Ships passing through the area have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately.
Earlier on Thursday, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy announced that only routes declared by Iranian authorities are authorized for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Xinhua, a statement released by the IRGC’s official news outlet, Sepah News, warned that navigation through other routes is dangerous and prohibited.
The statement emphasized, “Everyone should be aware that only the routes declared by Iran are valid for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Traffic outside these routes is extremely dangerous and should be avoided entirely.”
This incident comes at a time when maritime traffic in and around the Strait of Hormuz is gradually returning to normal. Recently, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Oman launched a new safety corridor aimed at helping stranded ships and sailors navigate this critical waterway safely.
On Tuesday, Iran and Oman issued a joint statement announcing their agreement to form a “joint working group” to discuss the future management of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Both countries reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safe passage of vessels through this waterway in accordance with international law.
