Death Toll Rises to 235 in Venezuela Earthquakes as President Orders Rescue Efforts

Caracas, June 26: The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening has risen to 235, according to the latest figures from the Ministry of Health. Initially reported at 32, the number of fatalities has dramatically increased.

Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has announced three major steps to expedite rescue and reconstruction efforts in the northern regions of the country affected by the quakes.

George Rodriguez, President of the National Assembly, stated that the acting president has directed private companies to provide heavy machinery for debris removal. Additionally, a special relief fund of $200 million will be established, along with a loan facility for affected businesses. These measures are aimed at addressing the devastation caused by some of the most severe earthquakes the country has experienced in decades.

Foreign Minister Ivan Gil announced on Thursday that the government is coordinating international aid. He noted that at least a dozen countries from various parts of the world, including regional neighbors, have offered assistance to Venezuela.

The two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, caused extensive damage in the north-central state of La Guaira and significant destruction in the Caracas metropolitan area.

According to George Rodriguez, approximately 200 people are trapped under the rubble. He emphasized, “We are racing against time in hopes of rescuing as many people as possible.”

Both earthquakes struck at a depth of about 10 kilometers, releasing most of their energy near the surface. The tremors occurred less than a minute apart, and the risk of collapsing damaged buildings remains due to subsequent aftershocks.

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed support for Venezuela, stating that he has instructed American government agencies to be ready for immediate assistance.

On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, “These two major earthquakes that have struck the great people of Venezuela are devastating and have claimed many lives. America is fully prepared to help. I have directed all agencies of my government to be on standby. We stand with our new and good friends. The initial reports are extremely concerning.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people, announcing preparations to provide necessary assistance to the South American nation.

She wrote on social media platform X, “Solidarity with the people of Venezuela. The Secretary of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the government of the country and I have already instructed the preparation of necessary aid. For now, they have appealed for help with rescue and health experts. Mexico will always stand in solidarity.”
